Catford Town Centre and Shopping: Broadway, Market, Car Parks and Changes
What is in Catford town centre, how the Broadway pedestrian zone and the markets work, where to park and what the council is changing.
Catford town centre centres on Catford Broadway, a pedestrian zone with a council-run street market open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm. The Catford Centre houses Catford Library and a covered market the council says it does not manage. Holbeach Road, Thomas Lane and Canadian Avenue car parks are the nearest, and Catford and Catford Bridge stations serve the centre.
Catford town centre is built around Catford Broadway and the Catford Centre. This guide sticks to what the council and venues publish and does not rank individual shops. The council describes Catford as sitting between Ladywell, Honor Oak and Hither Green, split between the Rushey Green and Catford South wards, on its Catford neighbourhood page.
What is in the centre?
- Catford Market. The council's markets page lists the street market as open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm, with toys, clothes, plants, fruit and vegetables, fish and multicultural foods. It also says the covered market in the Catford Centre, Tuesday to Sunday, is not managed by the council and offers clothing, fruit and veg and fresh seafood. The page records that the street market began in the 1880s and moved to the Broadway in 1929. Event days are in the markets and events guide.
- Catford Library, 23-24 Winslade Way, Catford Centre, SE6 4JU: Monday to Friday 9am to 7pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm, Sunday 10am to 4pm, closed on bank holidays, as listed on the council's library page. The libraries and post offices guide has more.
- The Broadway Theatre, on Catford Broadway, which lists its own visiting information on its visit page.
The council does not publish a single set of shop opening hours for the town centre, so check individual businesses for their hours.
How does the Broadway pedestrian zone work?
Catford Broadway is a pedestrian zone. The council's exemption permit page says only vehicles with a valid exemption permit can enter. It lists residents of the zone (up to five vehicles, any time), businesses on the Broadway needing deliveries, market traders and refuse and emergency vehicles. Business deliveries and trader loading are only before 10am and after 4pm, and delivery vehicles that do not need to enter can use loading bays on Rushey Green and Catford Road, which may have time limits.
Where do I park and how do I get there?
The Broadway Theatre says Canadian Avenue, Holbeach Road and Thomas Lane car parks are a few minutes' walk. On the council's car parks page, Holbeach Road has 672 spaces (15 disabled) open Monday to Saturday 8am to 6.30pm, Thomas Lane has 61 spaces (six disabled) with the same hours, and Canadian Avenue has 131 spaces (five disabled), public on Saturdays 8am to 6pm and for council staff only on weekdays. The parking guide covers charges and permits. The theatre lists Catford Bridge and Catford stations as a few minutes' walk, and the council's market page names buses 75, 124, 160, 171, 181, 185, 202, 284, 320 and 336. See the train stations guide and buses guide.
What is changing?
The council's timeline says the Catford Town Centre Framework was approved in 2021 as a long-term vision. It records the refurbishment of the Grade II listed Broadway Theatre and the move of Catford Library into the Catford Centre in 2022, and planning permission for Thomas Lane Yard in 2025. The Thomas Lane Yard page says the scheme will provide 113 homes, more than 1,000 square metres of commercial and affordable workspace and new public space, with enabling works in late 2026 and Thomas Lane car park closing in early 2027. Other current projects include station area improvements and restoring the former Catford Constitutional Club. Dates can move, so check the council pages before relying on them.
